Servers

A server consists of hardware or software or a combination of the two that makes resources, services or data available to other computers or programs. The server system is generally accessed via a network such as the Internet. In order to provide needs-based services, the systems are equipped with special hardware, software or other suitable resources. Depending on the system, servers can be operated in a normal office or in a professional server room (computer centre). The systems often have redundant capacity so that any malfunctions of individual components do not affect the system as a whole. In addition, so-called load balancers ensure that the workload on the resources available is evenly distributed. When server systems make their services available via the Internet, this is often referred to as cloud computing. Cloud telephone systems are also classed as server services.
