The USB headset is a combination of a microphone and headphone, which is connected via a USB connector to a computer or other device. Common areas of application are online gaming or phoning and video telephony via a computer. Using a cloud telephone system and a headset, a computer becomes a fully-fledged telephone, with many useful additional functions. Compared to a normal telephone handset, a headset has the advantage that your hands are free and available for other activities while making calls. By connecting the headset via a USB port, the computer does not require an analogue microphone input or speaker output. The headset itself adapts to the digital USB standard. When plugging it in, the computer automatically recognises the USB headset and install the necessary drivers. A manual installation by the user is not usually necessary. Often, headsets are equipped with their own controls for volume and microphone sensitivity. Professional solutions for telephony also have their own button to mute or hold a call.

The different variants of USB headsets

USB headsets are available in three basic versions. Headsets with two earpieces and a microphone on a bracket provide stereo playback and have a high audio quality. In addition, they limit interference from ambient noise. The ear cups can be attached to a headband or neckband.

USB headsets with a microphone and one earpiece on a bracket allow users to perceive the surrounding noise and are a little easier to wear, because they are lighter. Playback is limited to mono sound.

USB headsets with in-ear headphones are also available. These devices are very light and unobtrusive. They have good sound quality and are equipped with an integrated microphone in the cable.

The wireless USB headset

In addition to wired USB headsets there are also cordless versions. In these versions, only the base station is connected via USB to a computer. The actual headset communicates wirelessly with the base. Frequently used protocols for wireless communication are Bluetooth or DECT. DECT provides the advantage over Bluetooth that the headset can be used over greater distances from the base station.
