Your switch-off questions answered

What is the UK phone network switch-off?

The UK’s old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is being retired as phone services move to modern digital technology. It’s often called the “ISDN switch-off”, but the change affects more than ISDN.

How do I know if my business is affected?

If you still have traditional phone lines, ISDN, an older on-site phone system or equipment connected to an analogue line, you may be affected. If you’re unsure, check with your current communications provider rather than assuming you’ve already migrated.

What happens if I do nothing?

If your business still relies on services running over the old network when those legacy services are withdrawn, they may stop working. Leaving it late can also put unnecessary pressure on number porting, equipment changes, supplier coordination and testing.

Can I keep my existing business phone numbers?

In many cases, existing numbers can be transferred to a new service. Number porting should be included in your migration planning so important numbers are moved and tested before legacy services are retired.

What does AI actually add to my phone system?

NFON AI Essentials can turn calls into transcripts, summaries and actions, making important information easier to find and follow up. Nia FrontDesk can greet callers, answer common questions and direct them to the right person or team.

When is the old phone network switching off?

The PSTN is due to be retired on 31 January 2027. If your business still uses legacy phone services, now is the time to identify what needs to move and plan your migration.

Is it only my phones I need to check?

No. Legacy lines can also support payment terminals, lift and emergency phones, alarms, security systems, door entry, intercoms, fax machines and other analogue equipment. Check everything connected to an old phone line before it is disconnected.

Do I need to replace all my phones?

Not necessarily. What you need will depend on your existing equipment and how you want your business to work. With cloud telephony, people can make and receive business calls using desk phones, computers and mobiles, so your new setup doesn’t have to look like your old one.

Why choose cloud telephony instead of simply replacing ISDN?

Because you have to make a change anyway. Cloud telephony lets business calling work across different locations and devices, rather than tying your phone system to physical lines or an office PBX. With NFON, you can also add intelligent AI capabilities around your calls.

What should I do first?

Start by checking what you have. List your phone numbers, users, sites, lines and connected equipment, including alarms, lifts and payment devices. Then identify what needs to move and agree a migration and testing plan. The campaign’s simple approach is: Check → Plan → Switch.
