[Write to us](/gb/request-information "Write to us") ### Cordless telephony [DECT standard for wireless communication in cordless telephony](/gb/get-started/cloud-telephony/lexicon/knowledge-base-detail/cordless-telephony#section-3) [Cordless telephony via Wi-Fi](/gb/get-started/cloud-telephony/lexicon/knowledge-base-detail/cordless-telephony#section-4) # Cordless telephony With cordless telephony, the handset is connected to a local base via radio technology. Cordless telephony is therefore different from [mobile telephony](/gb/get-started/cloud-telephony/lexicon/knowledge-base-detail/mobile-phone-network). Although the cordless phone does make the user mobile, he is limited to the range of his base. Cordless phones have a range of about 30 meters inside buildings and about 100 meters outdoors. For the greatest possible range, the local base should be placed in a central location. The base is connected to the network provider's analogue or digital telephone connection or a router. Depending on the model, several handsets can be used with one base. If several handsets are connected to the base, the different handsets can be used as an intercom without using the external [telephone network](/gb/get-started/cloud-telephony/lexicon/knowledge-base-detail/telecommunication-networks). In this case the base takes on the function of a [central telephone system](/gb/gb/products/cloudya). The base can typically also be used to charge the handset. ### DECT standard for wireless communication in cordless telephony The [DECT](/gb/get-started/cloud-telephony/lexicon/knowledge-base-detail/dect) standard is widely established for wireless communication between the base and the handsets. Standardisation and DECT-GAP allow devices from different manufacturers to be used with a base. Within Europe, DECT uses a frequency range between 1.88 and 1.90 gigahertz. Some other countries use different frequency ranges. Cordless phone may therefore only be operated in the certified countries. In addition to telephony, DECT can be used for additional functions. For example, text messages can be transmitted to a handset via DECT. ### Cordless telephony via Wi-Fi Although there are cordless phones on the market which use Wi-Fi, this standard has not been able to prevail over DECT. This is due to some system restrictions Wi-Fi technology has. In addition to a limited range compared to DECT, users of Wi-Fi phones may in some cases need to anticipate inadequate [bandwidths](/gb/get-started/cloud-telephony/lexicon/knowledge-base-detail/bandwidth) due to parallel data transmission on the Wi-Fi network, since phones and other devices share the bandwidth. This can cause interruptions or even dropped connections. Want to know more? DECT is often used for cordless telephony in buildings and has established a strong presence in this market. A cordless phone with this standard usually consists of a DECT base station and one or more handsets. The DECT base station is connected to the network by an analogue or digital phone line. It handles the radio part of the phone connectionand voice transmission with the handsets. Systems using the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications standard allow a single base station to support up to 6 cordless handsets. The frequency range uses various radio bands at around the 2 GHz range. A handset can be used at distances of up to 50 metres indoors and up to 300 metres in an open environment and reach standard data rates of 32 kilobits per second. The maximum transmission power of the base station is limited, so that coverage over any greater distance can only be achieved with booster units. In order to be used, a handset must first be authenticated by a base station. In general, this is accomplished by using a special PIN, set by the user. The DECT standard can also provide the encrypted transfer of user data, thereby protecting it from unauthorised access. However, this type of transmission is relatively rarely used and is not implemented in many phones. In order to reduce so-called electric smog there are various methods used within Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications to minimise the transmitting power of both the base station and the handset while in idle mode.
